Report: Miami Dolphins add defensive reinforcement as Jerome Baker hits injured reserve

The Miami Dolphins reportedly are signing linebacker Calvin Munson to their active roster ahead of the team’s matchup against the Tennessee Titans in Week 14 of the NFL season.

Munson comes over after being on the New England Patriots practice squad. He spent multiple seasons with the Dolphins earlier in his career and now gives the team some depth with Jerome Baker hitting injured reserve.

Over the last two seasons (including the current campaign), Munson has appeared in four games in the NFL — all for New England. This season, he’s played in three games, making one tackle.

While he hasn’t gotten a lot of playing time at the NFL level in the 2023 campaign, Munson does have some familiarity with the Dolphins organization that should help him transition to the team quickly.

For his career, Munson has appeared in 46 games across stints with the Dolphins, Patriots and New York Giants while making seven starts along the way. He has one forced fumble, two sacks, 88 combined tackles and six tackles for loss in his NFL career.

His best season was his rookie campaign with New York, as he started five games for the Giants and recorded both of his career sacks that season. It’s unclear how big of a role Munson will have — if any — for Miami against Tennessee.

Replacing Baker won’t be easy for the Dolphins, as the former third-round pick has recorded 69 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and two interceptions in 12 games this season.

Hopefully, Miami’s other defenders can step up against a Tennessee team that enters Week 14 with just a 4-8 record.

The Titans have been playing rookie quarterback Will Levis as of late, and he’ll look to get the team its first road win of the season in Week 14. The Titans are currently 0-6 on the road.

Miami holds the No. 1 seed in the AFC through the first 13 weeks of the 2023 NFL season, and the squad can lock that spot in with a strong finish to the regular season. It won’t be easy, but the team has to get things started by beating a lesser Tennessee squad on Monday.
