Report: Miami Dolphins recently worked out multiple veteran defensive linemen

The Miami Dolphins reportedly worked out multiple veteran defensive linemen — Trevon Coley, Justin Ellis and Carlos Davis — ahead of their matchup against the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 11.

Coley hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2020 season, when he was a member of the Arizona Cardinals. In six games played (two starts) for the Cardinals during the regular season, he accumulated 14 combined tackles, nine solo tackles, three tackles for loss, five assists on tackles and two quarterback hits.

The 29-year-old spent time playing for the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts before he joined the Cardinals.

Ellis, meanwhile, has played for three teams — the Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants — across his nine seasons in the NFL. Most recently, he played for the Giants during the 2022 regular season and racked up 22 combined tackles, 17 assists on tackles, five solo tackles, one quarterback hit and two tackles for loss across 17 appearances and four starts with the team.

Finally, Davis was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 232 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and has played three seasons in the NFL, all with the Steelers. Arguably his best NFL season to this point came during his rookie season, the 2020 campaign, when he totaled six combined tackles, two assists on tackles, one tackle for loss and four solo tackles in seven games played.

The Dolphins — who now own a 9-3 record (the best in the AFC East by a wide margin) after their win over the Washington Commanders back on Dec. 3 — only have five games remaining on their regular-season schedule. After taking on the Titans, they will play the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, Ravens and Buffalo Bills.

Only time will tell if the Dolphins decide to sign any of Cooley, Davis or Ellis to their roster, but it seemingly makes sense for the team to on paper, as adding another defensive lineman would bolster Miami’s depth and only help its chances of making a deep playoff run.
