Raheem Mostert sharply addresses Jonathan Taylor-to-Miami Dolphins rumors

Raheem Mostert said Tuesday that he isn’t worried about the Miami Dolphins reportedly showing interest in trading for fellow running back Jonathan Taylor from the Indianapolis Colts.

Taylor reportedly has been granted permission by the Colts to seek a trade after being unable to secure a contract extension from the organization. The Dolphins have reportedly been active in the running back market this offseason and were very closely linked to Dalvin Cook before the former Minnesota Vikings star signed with the New York Jets earlier this month.

Mostert earlier this offseason supported the idea of adding Cook, saying it will “always be a bonus” to add another running back. The 31-year-old is preparing for his second season since returning to the Dolphins last season after six years with the San Francisco 49ers.

He is part of a Dolphins backfield that includes Jeff Wilson Jr., Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. Rookie De’Von Achane injured his shoulder in a preseason game against the Houston Texans and could miss some time, which could be heightening Miami’s interest in Taylor, who was the 2021 NFL rushing leader.

Mostert was able to play in 16 regular season games for the Dolphins last season after playing in only nine games combined in his final two seasons with the 49ers. Wilson also has a significant injury history and missed both of Miami’s preseason games so far. He also played in 16 games last season, eight each for the Dolphins and 49ers.

Achane gained 27 yards on six carries against the Texans before being carted off the field in the third quarter. Ahmed gained 99 yards on 12 carries and added four catches for 32 yards and a touchdown in the 28-3 win.

Taylor is available in part because of the depressed contract market for running backs, which likely has kept the Colts from offering a lucrative extension to the 24-year-old. He is currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues to recover from ankle surgery he had during the offseason.

Reports say the Colts are seeking a significant return in a trade for the former All-Pro, either a first-round pick or a collection of picks that equates to one.

If Miami is able to complete a deal, it looks like Taylor will be welcomed into the running back room by Mostert at least.
