Report: Miami Dolphins linked to former Florida State star as they consider adding to defensive line

The Miami Dolphins are continuing to try to bolster the team’s defensive line and are taking a look at free agent Marvin Wilson.

Wilson, who turns 25 next month, went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft and then signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns released Wilson during the 2021 preseason, with the tackle then getting picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wilson saw action in one game during each of the 2021 and 2022 campaigns for the Eagles, taking part in seven tackles, including three solo stops. In April of this year, the Eagles released him.

The rocky trajectory of Wilson’s football career in recent seasons has been in direct contrast to the promise it seemingly showed during his time at Florida State University.

After a quiet first season with the Seminoles in 2017, Wilson began to emerge the following year with 41 total tackles, including four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. In addition, he had one pass defended and also forced a fumble.

The following year, Wilson seemingly put himself in the mix to be a high draft pick with an even better season. His 44 total tackles included 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks, with four passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He did all that in nine games.

However, Wilson chose to return to Florida State for the 2020 season, a decision that seemingly didn’t pay off. He clashed with Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell by accusing the coach of lying and made an effort to lead a boycott of offseason workouts.

The situation was connected to the death of George Floyd, which sparked protests across the country. While Wilson and Norvell eventually indicated that they resolved their differences, Wilson went on to have a frustrating 2020 season in which he only played in six games.

Whether or not Wilson is able to show any signs that he’s back to his earlier form is something that the Dolphins will determine. Some observers consider the team’s line to be already among the best, though the ultimate results will start to come once the regular season gets underway next month.
