Dalvin Cook reportedly has a price in mind for what he wants from his next contract, and the Miami Dolphins could be bidding against the New York Jets as the AFC East rivals continue to be linked to the free agent running back.
Cook remains one of the top players on the market with training camps starting to open up around the NFL. The Miami native has been linked to the Dolphins since before being released by the Minnesota Vikings in early June, but he hasn’t been willing to accept an offer as of yet.
The Jets opened their training camp on Wednesday and will get a better feel on where running back Breece Hall stands in his return from an ACL injury suffered last season. New York has been one of the other teams linked to Cook this offseason but reportedly may not be willing to meet Cook’s demands.
The Dolphins are preparing to enter the season with Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. leading their backfield, and the offensive skill already on the roster has quarterback Tua Tagovailoa expecting “special” things from the team.
Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill shares that enthusiasm, saying that he gets “goosebumps” when he thinks about the potential of the Miami offense in its second season under head coach Mike McDaniel. The team has opened training camp for rookies, including touted running back De’Von Achane, with veterans set to report later in the month.
Cook was recently ranked as the No. 8 running back in the NFL in a survey by ESPN. He is coming off four straight Pro Bowl selections and four straight seasons of at least 1,100 rushing yards, but the Vikings parted with the 27-year-old in part because of financial considerations.
The AFC East is expected to be one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL this season, and the Dolphins haven’t won it since the 2008 campaign.
The Jets haven’t even made the playoffs since the 2010 season, so both sides could have the motivation to add another dynamic offensive player while at the same time keeping him away from a rival.
