Due to designating Byron Jones as a post-June 1 cut, the Miami Dolphins are about to pick up a significant amount of cap space.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is confident that the team will make “good use” of the extra cap space.
Having some cap flexibility is always a luxury, and $13.6 million is nothing to scoff at. It’s a significant development for the Dolphins as they move toward the 2023 regular season.
Some fans may already be dreaming of a flashy addition thanks to the cap space, but Dolphins insider Barry Jackson has a different perspective.
One way or another, the cap flexibility figures to make the Dolphins better. That’s good news for a team that’s looking to take a step forward in the 2023 season after going 9-8 in the 2022 campaign.
The Dolphins have had a nice offseason, adding key players and staffers in hopes of raising the squad’s ceiling. Many are starting to believe that Miami will be a serious problem in the AFC East, which is music to the ears of Dolphins fans.
The team hasn’t won the AFC East since the 2008 season and would certainly love nothing more than to end that drought.
Miami will open its 2023 season on the road in September against the Los Angeles Chargers. Things won’t get much easier from there, as the Dolphins are projected to have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL this season, per Sharp Football Analysis.
That could prove to be a blessing or curse for the Dolphins, depending on how their season unfolds. The hope, of course, is that the team has success against the difficult schedule and uses it to prepare for what the playoffs may hold.
For now, the Dolphins are still in offseason mode, putting in work as they prepare for what’s ahead. The team surely already has some ideas about how it’s going to use the extra cap space, and it’s just a matter of time until fans get to see how the organization approaches that.
The cap space will become official on Friday.
