Report: Miami Dolphins add to tight end room by signing veteran to 1-year deal

The Miami Dolphins have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with veteran tight end Tyler Kroft.

On Monday, it was reported that the Dolphins were still canvassing the tight end market, so this signing shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Kroft is coming off a quiet 2022 season in which he only caught four passes for 57 yards and no touchdowns in 11 games for the San Francisco 49ers.

The 30-year-old likely won’t need much time to fit in with the Dolphins as he’ll have some level of familiarity with Miami’s offensive scheme due to his time with the 49ers. Plenty of fans will remember that Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel spent time on the 49ers coaching staff before moving to South Florida.

A third-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2015 NFL Draft, Kroft has played eight NFL seasons so far in his career. During that time, he’s caught 105 passes for 1,081 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He’ll add some valuable veteran experience and knowledge to a group of tight ends that features some youngsters in Elijah Higgins, Julian Hill and Tanner Conner.

Higgins, Hill and Conner will surely take some time to pick Kroft’s brain about different tips and tricks he’s learned over the course of his NFL career.

Durham Smythe and Eric Saubert are two veteran tight ends currently on the roster.

The Dolphins recently lost Mike Gesicki to the New England Patriots. Throughout the entirety of the 2022 campaign, it seemed like Gesicki was destined to leave South Florida this offseason.

Gesicki’s role diminished in McDaniel’s offense, as he saw massive drop-offs in targets, catches and playing time. He recently spoke about that, and he took the high road with his comments.

It’ll be interesting to see how Kroft ends up doing with the Dolphins. He will do everything he can to help the team make it back to the postseason.

Miami lost its lone playoff game last season to the Buffalo Bills, one of Kroft’s former teams. Everyone in the organization is hoping to take things at least one step further this season.
