Report: Miami Dolphins have reached out to several potential undrafted rookie free agents

The Miami Dolphins reportedly have been reaching out to prospects that they could potentially add as undrafted free agents following this week’s NFL draft.

“The Dolphins have been reaching out to players of interest to them as potential undrafted rookie free agents,” the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson wrote. “Though they’re not permitted to offer contracts yet, they can tell those players that they likely will get calls from the Dolphins if they go undrafted.

“Among the potentially undrafted players that the Dolphins have called about: Elon cornerback Cole Coleman, Cal Poly receiver Chris Coleman, Hawaii running back Dedric Parson and Hawaii guard Micah Vanterpool.”

This is a smart move by Miami, as the team has limited draft capital in the 2023 NFL Draft. Miami has just four draft picks this draft since it lost a first-round selection for tampering.

That has left the team with picks No. 51 (second round), No. 84 (third round), No. 197 (sixth round) and No. 238 (seventh round).

Miami clearly seems interested in adding an influx of young talent, so nabbing some players that the team already liked as undrafted free agents would be a huge win.

It’s interesting to see that the team is also interested in a variety of positions, including cornerback, running back, wide receiver and guard. The team could always bolster its offensive line depth to make sure Tua Tagovailoa has proper protection in the 2023 season.

Miami has been linked to one of the top running backs in the draft, former University of Alabama star Jahmyr Gibbs. In fact, it was reported that head coach Mike McDaniel wouldn’t mind the team trading up to select Gibbs in the 2023 NFL Draft.

It could be possible that if the team doesn’t find the running back that it wants that Parson could be an option to join Jeff Wilson Jr., Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed in the running back room.

While it’s unlikely that an undrafted free agent will make a huge impact right away, the Dolphins could also find a diamond in the rough this offseason.

The 2023 NFL Draft begins with the first round on Thursday, April 27. It is followed by the second and third rounds on Friday, April 28 and concludes with rounds four through seven on Saturday, April 29.

If any of the players the Dolphins are interested in make it past Saturday’s seventh round, the team can offer them a contract to join the team as an undrafted free agent.
