Pennsylvania State University center says he’s spent time with Miami Dolphins during pre-draft process

The Miami Dolphins only have four selections in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing tons of scouting.

Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier attended the University of Alabama’s pro day on Thursday, and the two were spotted alongside offensive coordinator Frank Smith at Pennsylvania State University’s pro day on Friday.

It seems like one of the prospects they’re interested in is offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, who can play both guard and center. On Friday, Scruggs mentioned that he’s met with with the Dolphins during the pre-draft process.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pounder could be an interesting player for Miami to target in the later rounds.

“A two-year starter with center/guard versatility, Scruggs is dependable and consistent in carrying out his assignment to the best of his ability,” wrote NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. “He plays like a block of granite that is difficult to push back or knock off-balance, but he’s more of a neutralizer than road grader. He plays with solid technique and possesses the play strength to hold his own in the middle. The lack of foot quickness shows up with athletic defenders leaking around his edges and that issue could be exacerbated if teams play him at guard. Scruggs has the potential to go from backup to eventual starter if the situation is right.”

The Ohio native recently spoke about his versatility and even said that he’s willing to learn how to play tackle if needed. That’s something that the Dolphins will surely take into account.

“My experiences at Penn State made me an extremely versatile player,” he told Draft Network’s Justin Melo. “I played multiple positions throughout my time at Penn State. I’m definitely a guy that’s willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win.

“I can play both center and guard. If I have to learn how to play the tackle position, I’ll do that. My goal is to win football games. If playing multiple positions helps us achieve that goal, that’s what I’m willing to do.”

While it’s clear that Miami seems to have some level of interest in Scruggs, there are some other prospects that it might have its eyes on.

Grier, McDaniel and Smith were spotted talking to tight end Brenton Strange. After the expected departure of Mike Gesicki in free agency, Miami has a bit of a need at tight end.

During his collegiate career, Strange recorded 70 catches for 755 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s got good size, is pretty quick and should be available when Miami’s first pick comes around.

The Dolphins have made plenty of noise already this offseason, but there are still some holes on the roster. It’s clear that the organization is ready to challenge for a Super Bowl.
