Jalen Ramsey’s former coach says he sort of has a wrestling persona: ‘He flips a switch when he competes’

The Miami Dolphins’ acquisition of Jalen Ramsey earlier this month has fans high on the team’s chances for the 2023 season.

Several players from the organization expressed excitement about the cornerback’s arrival, which is expected to further bolster Miami’s secondary. The one-time Super Bowl winner is excited as well, claiming that his new squad is the best group he has ever been part of. That’s surely music to the ears of Dolphins fans everywhere.

In addition, Ramsey’s competitive spirit could be advantageous for a team that seemed to lose some of its edge on defense last season. Cody White, Ramsey’s coach during his senior year in high school, believes the 28-year-old has something of a “wrestling persona.”

“I think it’s almost like a wrestling persona,” said White, according to Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald. “He flips a switch when he competes.”

Those who have watched the cornerback before know that he isn’t afraid to get into it with opponents. He has figured in a few dust-ups before.

However, his primary strength that fans likely cannot wait to see on the field is his ability to blanket opposing wide receivers. In the past two campaigns, Ramsey has a combined eight interceptions, 34 passes defended and 126 solo tackles.

He also played a huge role in the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl run in the 2021 season. In the championship game, he had four total tackles and one pass defended.

Some might be concerned about the Rams’ significant slide on defense in the 2022 campaign and Ramsey’s part in the regression, as Los Angeles allowed 22.6 points per game. However, the former first-round pick wasn’t the main reason for that mark, as he still had plenty of solid performances on his way to his sixth Pro Bowl selection.

Now that he is with a Dolphins squad whose defensive coordinator is the famed Vic Fangio, Ramsey will have an opportunity to prove that he remains one of the top cornerbacks in the league.

Furthermore, he will share the field with Dolphins star Xavien Howard and play alongside safety Jevon Holland. Those three players have the potential to help the Dolphins sport one of the scariest defenses in the NFL.
