Report: Miami Dolphins re-sign Salvon Ahmed to cheap 1-year deal

The Miami Dolphins reportedly are bringing back running back Salvon Ahmed.

Ahmed, 24, has been with the Dolphins for the past three seasons after going undrafted out of the University of Washington.

This is a big move for Miami, as the team has a major hole in the backfield with Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson set to hit free agency. Those two backs led the way for the Dolphins in the 2022 season, especially after Chase Edmonds was moved at the trade deadline.

Last season, Ahmed played a small role for the Dolphins, appearing in just 12 games and receiving only 12 carries on the season. The young running back racked 64 yards and one touchdown on the ground. He also added a catch for eight yards.

It’s possible that Ahmed will have a bigger role in the Dolphins’ backfield in 2023 if the team doesn’t add much to the position this offseason. The Dolphins could sign players or draft a running back since they are so thin at the position.

The 2020 season was Ahmed’s best as a pro, as he started four of the six games that he appeared in for Miami. As a rookie that season, Ahmed rushed for 319 yards on 75 carries (4.3 yards per carry) and three touchdowns.

He’s shown he can be a decent pass catcher at the NFL level as well, catching 24 of his 34 career targets for 186 yards.

The Dolphins had an explosive offense in the 2022 season, mainly led by Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on the outside. However, if the Dolphins truly want to take the next step on offense, they need to establish a stronger ground game.

Miami ranked 25th in the NFL in rushing yards last season, averaging 4.3 yards per carry as a team (23rd in the NFL).

The Dolphins also ranked 31st in the league in rushing attempts. Part of that might’ve been due to the team’s success throwing the ball last season, but the lack of a consistent running game likely contributed as well.

Ahmed figures to get a chance to factor into the team’s backfield rotation now that he is back on the roster for the 2023 season.
