Mike White says he ‘100 percent’ would be interested in backup role with Miami Dolphins

If Miami Dolphins fans learned anything in the 2022 season, it’s that quarterback depth matters a lot.

For that reason, fans will be interested to learn that Mike White, who has appeared in eight games for the New York Jets over the last two seasons, is very interested in joining the Dolphins as a backup.

White is a free agent this offseason, but it’s worth noting that Jets head coach Robert Saleh seemingly expects to have the 27-year-old on the roster going forward.

Miami’s quarterback depth was tested in a big way in the 2022 season. With Tua Tagovailoa’s health being a major concern moving forward, the team is undoubtedly looking to have some viable backup options behind its star passer.

Tagovailoa appeared in 13 games for the Dolphins this past season. He missed four games in the regular season and was unable to suit up for Miami’s lone playoff game.

As a result, the team had to turn to Teddy Bridgewater on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, he couldn’t stay healthy either, so the team had to pivot to third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson for some huge games, including in the playoffs.

Adding a player like White wouldn’t help Tagovailoa stay healthy, but it would give the team another capable quarterback to have as insurance.

White’s best game at the professional level came last season against the Chicago Bears, as he threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns.

In his NFL career, White has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 2,145 yards in eight games. He’s thrown eight touchdowns, though it is hard to look beyond his 12 interceptions.

Regardless of the way he’s performed so far at the NFL level, he may have some untapped potential considering the fact that he was drafted just a few years back in 2018 and has only played in about half a season’s worth of games. If Miami were to sign him, perhaps he’d become a project of sorts for the organization.

He’ll be an interesting player to monitor as the offseason continues. The Dolphins will surely find ways to address their weaknesses in the coming months. They can use the draft, trades and/or free agency to fill in some of the gaps on their roster.
