Report: Miami Dolphins sign Mike Glennon to practice squad with quarterback situation in doubt

The quarterback situation for the Miami Dolphins has gone from bad to worse in recent weeks. The team lost starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after he suffered his second confirmed concussion of the season in Week 16.

Then, in a crucial Week 17 game, second-string quarterback Teddy Bridgewater went down with a finger injury. Now, with a potential playoff berth on the line, the team will likely rely on either an injured Bridgewater or rookie Skylar Thompson to lead the team to a win over the New York Jets.

As an insurance policy, the Dolphins have also reportedly added veteran journeyman Mike Glennon to the practice squad.

Surely, the Dolphins would prefer for Bridgewater — who has ample starting experience — to be under center once the game begins. However, a dislocated pinkie in his throwing hand could dramatically impact his ability to grip and throw the ball.

It stands to reason that if the Dolphins determine Bridgewater is unable to go, they will start Thompson and elevate Glennon to the active roster to act as a backup.

Things have deteriorated for the Dolphins over the last month or so. While a playoff spot seemed all but assured just a few weeks ago, the Dolphins are now no longer in control of their own destiny.

In order to get into the playoffs and end their postseason drought, the Dolphins will need to win against the Jets and hope that the Buffalo Bills defeat the New England Patriots. It seems like a reasonable scenario, but it is absolutely not guaranteed. That is especially true if Thompson ends up having to start.

In Week 5 against the Jets, Thompson threw the ball 33 times and completed 19 passes for 166 yards and an interception. The Dolphins lost that game 40-17.

In Week 17, Thompson did fare a little better against the Patriots after Bridgewater left the game with the pinkie injury. He completed 12 passes on 21 attempts for 104 yards, one score and one pick.

As for Glennon, he hasn’t played an NFL game since last season. He’s registered 40 appearances (31 starts) in his career, owns a record of 6-25 and has passed for 7,025 yards, 47 scores and 35 picks in the NFL.
