Report: Miami Dolphins working out new quarterback amid Tua Tagovailoa uncertainty

With the playing status of Tua Tagovailoa uncertain for the remainder of the season, the Miami Dolphins are set to work out free agent quarterback Jack Coan on Thursday.

Tagovailoa was placed in concussion protocol on Monday after he self-reported symptoms stemming from a hit during the Dolphins’ 26-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Sunday’s defeat can likely be attributed at least in part to Tagovailoa’s injury. That’s because the team was shut out after the injury apparently took place. Tagovailoa uncharacteristically threw interceptions on each of the Dolphins’ final three drives.

On Wednesday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed that Tagovailoa had suffered another concussion. McDaniel also stated that Teddy Bridgewater would start in Tagovailoa’s place on Sunday for the Dolphins’ crucial road clash against the New England Patriots.

Coan’s Story

Coan began his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin. From 2017 to 2019, he threw for 3,278 yards and 23 touchdowns, with just eight interceptions.

After injuring his foot in October 2020, Coan ended up not seeing the field all season during the Badgers’ shortened campaign. Following the conclusion of that season, Coan announced plans to transfer to the University of Notre Dame.

In his lone season with the Fighting Irish, Coan virtually matched his three-year output at Wisconsin by throwing for 3,150 yards, 25 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

Coan led Notre Dame to a berth in the Fiesta Bowl and played a key role in helping the Irish finish with an 11-2 record on the year.

After the 2022 NFL Draft concluded, Coan signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. He was released by the Colts during the preseason, but did deliver one highlight-worthy moment against the Detroit Lions.

Coan stands 6-foot-3 and turned 24 earlier this month. If the Dolphins end up signing him, he’ll presumably only serve as an emergency quarterback if Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson suffer injuries.

With respect to the Dolphins as a whole, the team simply needs to win on Sunday after suffering four straight losses. The team can still reach the postseason if it loses to the Patriots but would need to defeat the New York Jets on Jan. 8 and hope the Patriots lose at Buffalo that same day.
