Tony Dungy says Tua Tagovailoa is the MVP so far this season over Josh Allen

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa seems to have a believer in Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy.

Dungy explained on Twitter why he believes the 24-year-old is the MVP so far in the 2022 NFL season.

Dungy makes some pretty indisputable points. The Dolphins are 6-0 this season when Tagovailoa starts and finishes games, and they’re 0-3 when he doesn’t.

MVP conversations are always fascinating in the sports world because everyone seems to have unique perspectives when it comes to what the criteria should be.

To some, numbers are what matter most. To others, it’s the eye test.

But to many NFL fans, and perhaps to Dungy as well, there’s nothing more relevant than the importance of a player to his team’s success.

That’s an argument that’s definitely working in Tagovailoa’s favor this season. The Dolphins are 6-3 and seem like major threats to make a playoff run, but without Tagovailoa, the team would likely be closer to .500 or perhaps even below it.

Wins and losses aren’t an ideal way to evaluate a quarterback, but there’s no denying how vital the former No. 5 overall pick is to Miami’s success.

Beyond that, Tagovailoa is having a very impressive statistical season. In seven games, he has completed 69.9 percent of his passes for 1,980 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he’s thrown just three interceptions in the process.

He leads the league in quarterback rating, yards gained per pass attempt and yards gained per pass completion. The youngster is having the breakout season many fans were itching to see from him.

At the end of the day, however, Tagovailoa is a long shot to take home NFL MVP honors this season. There are several superstar quarterbacks who have much better odds than the Dolphins quarterback does when it comes to the prestigious award.

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t Miami’s MVP, and if he leads the Dolphins to the promised land this season, he likely won’t care much about regular season awards.

The Dolphins will be in action this Sunday for a Week 10 matchup against the Cleveland Browns at home.
