Report: Tua Tagovailoa officially named Miami Dolphins captain before pivotal season

Ahead of a crucial third NFL season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been named a team captain.

The other team captains are Tyreek Hill, Terron Armstead, Elandon Roberts, Jevon Holland, Xavien Howard and Christian Wilkins.

Tagovailoa was not named a team captain last season, so this is certainly a very big step in the University of Alabama product’s development.

While quarterbacks are generally already the leaders of their respective offenses, it’s definitely still meaningful for them to be officially recognized as captains.

Tagovailoa is entering what is essentially a make-or-break season. He’s played in two seasons with the Dolphins and had many nice plays, but there are lots of people who still are not convinced by him.

This season, he will have an improved offense around him. The Dolphins went out and acquired the likes of Hill, Armstead, Raheem Mostert, Chase Edmonds, Cedrick Wilson Jr. and more in order to get the 24-year-old some better support on offense.

New head coach Mike McDaniel and offensive coordinator Frank Smith will surely open up the offense a bit more in order to better use Tagovailoa’s talents.

Last season, he completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 2,653 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also threw 10 interceptions.

He’s had a solid training camp and preseason and seems to have some good chemistry with Hill. Both players will need to be on the same page if Miami wants to have any success in the upcoming season.

Miami is looking to make it to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season, and expectations are higher than they’ve been in a while. The Dolphins will open up the regular season at home against the New England Patriots on Sept. 11.
