Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland of the Miami Dolphins took to Instagram to express their support for John Metchie III.
The Houston Texans rookie is currently in a battle off the football field. He recently disclosed that he has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia, which will likely cause him to sit out the 2022 season.
It is quite an unfortunate turn of events for the University of Alabama product, as he was looking to make an immediate impact for a rebuilding Texans team.
Houston even spent some of its draft capital to acquire Metchie. The organization sent three picks to the Cleveland Browns for the No. 44 pick in the 2022 draft.
Metchie was coming off a fruitful collegiate career, having won several awards, including the Jon Cornish Trophy twice. The award is given to the top Canadian NCAA football player. Metchie was the first receiver ever to earn it and is one of only two two-time recipients of the trophy.
During his last year in college, he collected 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. His team made it to the 2021 SEC Championship Game, where Metchie sustained a torn ACL.
Waddle and Holland clearly empathize with the 22-year-old wide receiver. Even so, they are likely still focused on helping the Dolphins return to playoff contention this season.
The preseason is nearing its start, and the Dolphins are slated to face off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first. After two more preseason games, they will kick off the regular season with a match against the New England Patriots.
