Mike McDaniel explains why he believes that Tua Tagovailoa’s ‘best days are in front of him’

The Miami Dolphins have a new coaching staff in place heading into the 2022 NFL season.

In some cases, when a new coaching staff comes in, many players that were acquired by the previous regime end up getting replaced. That does not seem like it will be the case with young quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, however. New Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel appears to be incredibly bullish on Tagovailoa.

He recently made it clear that he believes Tagovailoa has some really impressive football ahead of him. McDaniel joined NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” on Thursday to discuss the youngster’s future.

“I’m really excited moving forward because the guy has some skills that I think are untapped,” he said. “I think it’s important that you empower the quarterback with the rest of the players around him and the scheme you bring forth. So, I think his best days are in front of him. And that’s a really cool piece of the process to be part of as a coach.”

Tagovailoa dealt with injuries that forced him to miss some time in the 2021 season. When all was said and done, he appeared in 13 games, making 12 starts.

He finished the year with 2,653 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns and a completion percentage of 67.8. He did toss 10 interceptions, and there is no doubt room for improvement, but he had moments in which he flashed true brilliance.

Going forward, the hope is that the offensive-minded McDaniel and his staff will be able to get the best out of Tagovailoa. As the NFL approaches the 2022 draft and free-agency period, it will be fascinating to see what sort of talent the Dolphins add on the offensive side.

Based on whatever moves the team ends up making, fans should be able to get a pretty good idea of how the Dolphins plan to put Tagovailoa in the best position possible to succeed.
