Report: Deshaun Watson would ‘almost certainly’ still waive no-trade clause for Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have been linked to Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson for some time, but Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has shown his support for Tua Tagovailoa since the firing of Brian Flores.

While there has been speculation that Watson’s stance on landing with the Dolphins has changed now that Flores is gone, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox doesn’t necessarily believe that’s the case.

“If Miami is still looking to trade for Watson this offseason—and that could hinge on how the incoming coach feels about incumbent quarterback Tua Tagovailoa—the former Clemson standout will almost certainly waive his no-trade clause with Houston,” Knox wrote.

Watson, who is dealing with several accusations of sexual misconduct against him, did not play in the 2021 season. The Texans opted to keep Watson on their roster, but they played Davis Mills and Tyrod Taylor at quarterback this season.

It remains to be seen if the Dolphins are willing to part with a package for Watson considering his legal issues.

While Miami opted to stick with Tagovailoa and not trade for Watson at the NFL’s trade deadline in the 2021 season, it is possible that the team could pivot and reconsider making a deal this offseason.

Miami missed the playoffs in the 2021 season, as it started the year 1-7 before going on a seven-game win streak and eventually finishing the season with a 9-8 record.

Watson is one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, but there is a huge risk in trading for a player with such serious accusations against him.
