Report: Miami Dolphins among ‘potential trade destinations’ for Russell Wilson

A new report indicates that the Miami Dolphins are among the teams that could be a trading partner with the Seattle Seahawks for superstar quarterback Russell Wilson.

Michael-Shawn Dugar, Mike Sando and Jayson Jenks of The Athletic indicated that the issue of control of the offense between Wilson and Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has opened up the possibility of Wilson being dealt elsewhere.

“Wilson and Carroll have won at least nine games in each of nine seasons together,” Dugar, Sando and Jenks wrote. “They have made the playoffs every season but one, won a Super Bowl and lost another. But the Seahawks haven’t reached the NFC Championship game since 2014, and Wilson’s frustration has escalated to the point that his camp has broached potential trade destinations with the Seahawks. According to sources, those teams include ones mentioned in La Canfora’s column the day of the Super Bowl: the Dolphins, [New York] Jets, [New Orleans] Saints and [Las Vegas] Raiders. Some people around the league think a trade could happen, if not this offseason then sometime in the near future.”

The Dolphins have already had a busy offseason when it comes to rumors about unhappy quarterbacks, with Houston Texans signal-caller Deshaun Watson prominently mentioned as a trade possibility.

While both Wilson and Watson have put up monster numbers during their respective careers, the Dolphins apparently remain committed to Tua Tagovailoa as their quarterback of the future.

Tagovailoa started nine games, throwing for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns. They’re respectable numbers, but they pale compared to those of Wilson and Watson.

In Wilson’s nine seasons with the Seahawks, the 32-year-old has thrown for 33,946 yards, 267 touchdown passes and has been sent to to the Pro Bowl on seven different occasions.

The 25-year-old Watson has only played four seasons, but he’s put up monster numbers during that short span of time. In 2020, he threw for 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Acquiring either Wilson or Watson would likely require the Dolphins to give up a number of key assets, which likely isn’t their plan.

For now, the idea of Wilson wearing a Dolphins uniform in 2021 remains simply speculation.
