According to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins are reportedly willing to trade 2013 third-round draft pick Will Davis, a cornerback from Utah State University.
Davis has played in just 15 games so far over his two-year career because of injuries, which includes a torn ACL that ended his 2014 season after suffering the knee injury during Miami’s 22-9 victory over the Buffalo Bills last November.
So far during the 2015 NFL preseason, Davis has played in all three games and has recorded seven tackles and one pass deflection. According to Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, the team is trying to figure out where Davis fits in the team’s 2015 defensive rotation.
“Obviously, he is coming off of an injury and we’ve seen development over the last five weeks and so we think there will be some more development there from a physical standpoint,” said Philbin on Davis’ progress. “Then obviously the performance, you’ve got to weigh all those things when you make a decision.”
Salguero reports that the Dolphins are shopping Davis around the league before Saturday’s mandatory roster cut to 53 players. However, it is not clear yet whether the team will cut the third-year cornerback if Miami is unable to trade him.
Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes and either Jamar Taylor or Brice McCain will be the starters, followed by veteran Zack Bowman and rookies Bobby McCain and Tony Lippett as reserves. Considering the Dolphins might plan to keep six cornerbacks on their active roster, Davis figures to be the odd man out.
Davis is expected to play tomorrow night in the Dolphins’ preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which is a a great opportunity for the cornerback to prove his worth to the coaching staff and front office.
