The Miami Dolphins will face the Kansas City Chiefs without their leading receiver after Caleb Douglas was ruled out with an ankle injury.

The rookie will miss Sunday’s game after hurting his right ankle against San Francisco. His absence takes an early contributor away from Malik Willis as Miami prepares for its home opener.

Douglas has seven catches for 113 yards through two games, with the yardage total topping the Dolphins’ receiving list.

Replacing him is complicated by the health of two other receivers: Chris Bell was limited in both Wednesday’s and Thursday’s practices, while Ryan Miller went from limited participation to sitting out Thursday, according to the team’s practice report.

That leaves Miami trying to redistribute meaningful work while still determining how much it can ask of the available replacements.

Caleb Douglas had already given Miami a productive target

The Dolphins selected Douglas in the third round, and he immediately contributed five receptions for 94 yards against Las Vegas. He added two catches for 19 yards in the 49ers game before this week’s absence.

His debut provided more than an encouraging box score. Douglas led all rookies that week in receptions, receiving yards and yards after the catch, finishing with 35 yards after the catch.

Those numbers are a small sample, but they identify production Miami now has to replace. Douglas had already shown he could help a possession after securing the ball, an important contribution for an offense still establishing its connections with Willis.

The team also posted video of Douglas converting a third-and-7 against San Francisco. The play offers a specific example of the routine work behind his early numbers: giving the quarterback a completion that keeps the offense on the field.

Malik Washington is next on Miami’s receiving list with 96 yards, making him another established source of early production. Jalen Tolbert and rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. are also among the options as the Dolphins distribute Douglas’ work.

Chris Bell expects a larger assignment, but his knee remains part of the picture

Chris Bell

Bell said this week that he expected to play He has been managing soreness and fluid in the left knee he had surgically repaired following his college ACL injury.

“If he’s down, if he’s not playing, then I’ve got to come in,” Bell said. “I’ve got to play more than what I was used to. I’ve been preparing for that. I’m just waiting on my opportunity. I feel like I haven’t played that many snaps because they’re trying to be conservative with my knee, but now I feel like I’m good.”

That willingness gives Miami a potential answer, although it does not establish how large his workload will be. The Dolphins still have to balance his preparation for additional snaps with the practice limitations recorded this week.

Miller’s situation adds another consideration. He supplied the late touchdown in Miami’s loss to San Francisco, but Thursday’s missed practice means his availability also warrants attention.

Neither Bell’s stated expectation nor Miller’s practice participation should be mistaken for a final game designation. Miami has already added another receiver to its practice squad.

The team announced AJ Henning’s signing Thursday, releasing long snapper Luke Basso in the corresponding move. That transaction supplies another option; it does not itself announce that Henning will play Sunday.

For Willis, the changes arrive as he is trying to turn individual improvements into more sustained offense. Asked Wednesday about Miami’s execution against San Francisco, he pointed to progress from the opener while emphasizing that the group still needed to improve.

“It’s about continuing to gain confidence and grow and keep getting better as a unit,” Willis said in his media availability.

Douglas’ absence interrupts one of the connections that had already produced results. Washington’s early yardage gives Miami something to build on, but the offense also needs dependable contributions from the receivers taking on additional work, particularly if Bell or Miller remains limited.

The Dolphins host Kansas City Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium. Douglas will be unavailable; the next question is how effectively Miami can share his responsibilities among the receivers who suit up.
