Tua’s interesting philosophy on his lack of interceptions in training camp

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had some problems taking care of the ball in recent seasons. He has thrown 21 interceptions across his last two seasons in the league, including a career-high 14 in the 2023 season alone.

However, through seven practices of the Dolphins’ training camp, he’s really valued offensive possessions. He has yet to throw a single interception, but Tagovailoa isn’t taking too much stock in how he’s fared in training camp in that regard. Tagovailoa seems to be more concerned with the bigger picture and getting himself acclimated to plays.

“I would say Iโ€™m not thinking too much about it if I throw an interception or if I donโ€™t throw an interception,” Tagovailoa said. “In camp, you just want to see how consistent you can be with the plays that youโ€™re given, and a lot of the times itโ€™s Iโ€™m just going to try to see what this is going to look like and what this is going to play like, and if you want to try to see if this fits in this window on a certain pass, you try to see it. We did that today on one of the first plays maybe of camp today.

“Iโ€™m not really basing it off of what the result is or isnโ€™t for myself in this training camp. I have about two or three things max that I have for myself that Iโ€™m focusing on for each practice that I go out there. I can tell you two of the three things, I did not do really well today. So thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m saying, itโ€™s not result-oriented because I know for myself what wanted to get done, and I wasnโ€™t able to get that done today.โ€

While one of Tagovailoa’s top goals for the 2025 season should be to limit his interceptions, his primary objective should be to stay out of harm’s way. Much of his career has been plagued by injuries to this point, as he’s played in more than 13 games in just one of his first five NFL seasons. Not only that, but he was limited to just 11 appearances in a 2024 campaign that went awry for Miami.

Miami’s offensive attack will look different than it did a season ago, and Tagovailoa would be wise to use his reps in training camp to develop chemistry with the new additions. Tight end Darren Waller could be a focal point of the team’s offense in the coming 2025 season, especially now that Jonnu Smith is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Waller might have to shake off some rust considering he’s coming out of retirement to play for the Dolphins, but he isn’t that far removed from being one of the more productive tight ends in the league. He last played in the NFL with the New York Giants back in the 2023 campaign.

Wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine could be a major contributor for the Dolphins as well. He is on the heels of a career year with the Tennessee Titans, as he pulled down a career-high 497 receiving yards across nine starts with Tennessee in the 2024 season.

With any luck, Tagovailoa’s precise passing so far in training camp will carry over to the coming season and he will continue to do a superb job at limiting his mistakes.
