Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will still have a role during Sundayโs game against the Seattle Seahawks even though he won’t be on the field playing.
According to NFL Networkโs Tom Pelissero, Tagovailoa made the trip with the Dolphins to Seattle and will be on the sideline with an earpiece to help out quarterback Skylar Thompson.

โLetโs talk about Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins quarterback, who is not going to play until at least late October as he seeks answers about his latest concussion,โ Pelissero said. โHowever, Tua made the trip to Seattle for todayโs game, and Iโm told heโs gonna be on the sideline. Heโs gonna have an earpiece in, able to help out Skylar Thompson, who’s makin’ his first start at quarterback since the 2022 playoffs.
โThe doctors cleared Tua to make this trip. And they have told him as long as heโs feeling good, he should go about doin’ normal activities, which is what Tua wants. Certainly a good sign for his recovery that heโs able to make a cross-country flight and be involved with the team as he has been throughout this week. He has visits to specialists scheduled in the coming weeks here. His return to play (is) still on target, though the timeline remains nonspecific at this time.โ
Itโs nice to see that Tagovailoa appears to be doing well and that he will still be involved for the Dolphins on Sunday.
A former seventh-round pick, Thompson is looking to lead Miami to a road win as it tries to stay afloat in the AFC without its star quarterback.
After taking over for Tagovailoa during the Dolphinsโ Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Thompson completed eight of his 14 pass attempts for 80 yards. He did not throw a touchdown or an interception in the game. The 27-year-old also added one carry for four yards.
Miamiโs offense still has a ton of playmakers in Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, DeโVon Achane and others, but it will be up to Thompson to be able to get them the ball consistently.
During the 2022 season, Thompson started one playoff game (against Buffalo) and two regular-season games. He appeared in seven regular-season games in total, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 534 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
Miami went 1-1 in the two games that Thompson started during the 2022 regular season, and itโs hoping that it can do even better with him under center in 2024.
The Dolphins and Seahawks are scheduled to kick off at 4:05 p.m. EST on Sunday.
