Willie Snead finally addresses calling Tua Tagovailoa ‘soft AF’

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Willie Snead talked to the media about a tweet he posted regarding quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in January, when Snead had yet to sign with Miami.

His post on X (formerly known as Twitter) came on the same day that the Dolphins lost a playoff game to the Kansas City Chiefs by a final score of 26-7. Tagovailoa โ€” after leading the NFL in total passing yards during the 2023 regular season โ€” didn’t play at the top of his game against Kansas City, considering he totaled 199 passing yards while completing just 20 of his 39 passing attempts.

“Yeah, to be honest, I was watchin’ the game,” Snead said of the playoff game between the Dolphins and Chiefs. “A fan of the game, and I was rootin’ for the Dolphins that game. I wanted the Dolphins to get past the Chiefs, and I was emotional about it and I tweeted something I probably shouldn’t have and I regret it today.”

Snead joined the Dolphins after an unspectacular 2023 campaign with the San Francisco 49ers. He played in far fewer than half of the 49ers’ 17 regular-season games, and across four appearances, he totaled 14 receiving yards on two receptions.

Interestingly, Snead enjoyed his best season in the NFL in his maiden season in the pros. He played in 15 games with the New Orleans Saints in the 2015 regular season and racked up 984 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns and 44 first downs receiving while also averaging an impressive 65.6 receiving yards per game.

The 31-year-old will hope to have a bigger impact in the upcoming 2024 regular season for a Dolphins offense led by the subject of his X post in Tagovailoa. In his fourth season in the NFL, the signal-caller finished with career-highs in passing touchdowns (29), first downs passing (222) and passing success rate (50.8 percent) on top of racking up a league-high 4,624 total passing yards.

But, as aforementioned, Tagovailoa wasn’t able to parlay his regular-season success into Miami’s short stint in the playoffs, and he has yet to win a playoff game in the NFL.

Snead’s first opportunity to take the field for the Dolphins will come in just over a week, when the squad is scheduled to play the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 9 in a preseason game.
