The Miami Dolphins had a fight break out at practice on Tuesday, after a rough showing from the offense.
“The offense, which was having its worst day of camp because of bad snaps, dropped passes and turnovers, didn’t resemble the unit that led the NFL in total offense last year,” the Miami Herald’s Kaushik Sampath wrote.
“But as 11-on-11 drills continued, frustrations reached its tipping point.”
The Dolphins were in a third-down drill when rookie running back Jaylen Wright and cornerback Kader Kahou began shoving one another.
“A scrum ensued, and was highlighted by rookie offensive tackle Patrick Paul, who is 6-foot-7, 332 pounds, lifting Kohou high in the air and nearly suplexed the 5-foot-10, 197 pound cornerback to the ground,” wrote Sampath.
Tyreek Hill spoke on the practice fight, but didn’t necessarily deem it to be an issue.
“I think the fight we had today was amazing,” Hill said. “We need that. Teams that I’ve been on that won, those teams fought. They aren’t going to fight in the locker room. This is where you fight. Then right after the play you calm yourself down, in between the whistle you’re right back at it with no mental errors.”
A Super Bowl champion during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Hill certainly knows what it takes to win at the highest level in the NFL.
If the Dolphins are competing at a high level and frustrations boil over, it could just be a sign that both sides – offense and defense – want the best out of each other.
The 2024 season is going to be a critical one for the Dolphins, as they’d like to finally win a playoff game under head coach Mike McDaniel. Miami has made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, but it was knocked out in the first round on both occasions.
After Tuesday’s practice, cornerback Jalen Ramsey – another Super Bowl champion – gave a speech to the team about “being the bully.”
“The speech seemingly resonated with those who could hear it, including owner Steve Ross, who was on the field for his first training camp practice of 2024, seeing as how the word ‘bully’ was brought up countless times during Tuesday’s media availability,” Sampath wrote.
There’s no doubt that the Dolphins have a team that is talented enough to make a deep run in the playoffs. Just last season, Miami was in the mix for an AFC East title, but it lost to the Buffalo Bills on the final day of the season.
It seems like Hill and Ramsey are focused on the team being tougher and ready to compete in the 2024 campaign.
The Dolphins will open up the 2024 regular season on Sunday, Sept. 8 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
