An unnamed agent with connections to the Miami Dolphins franchise provided a reality check about the saga related to Miami’s former defensive coordinator in Vic Fangio.

“It’s no different from any other team,” the agent told the Palm Beach Post.

Hal Habib went on to explain the agent’s comment.

“Meaning there was a segment of players who didn’t like playing under Fangio, another segment fine with him and likely a segment who didn’t care much either way on a personal level as long as the results were there on a professional level,” he wrote.

These words from the anonymous agent were revealed in light of Dolphins insider Omar Kelly confirming on social media that the entirety of the team’s defensive unit disliked Fangio.

Fangio served as Miami’s defensive coordinator for just one season, the 2023 season. Under Fangio, the Dolphins were one of the better teams in the NFL during the regular season. Miami won 11 of its 17 regular-season contests, which was tied for the second-most wins of any team in the AFC.

The Baltimore Ravens were the only team in the conference to end up with more wins than Miami, as the Ravens finished with a league-best 13-4 record.

But while Miami was one of the better teams in the regular season, the Dolphins’ offense might have had more to do with the squad’s impressive record than its defense. With Fangio leading the way, Miami allowed teams to scored 23.0 points per contest, which was the 11th-most of any team in the league.

Additionally, Miami allowed opponents to rack up 3,761 total passing yards and 391 total points.

But if there are two defensive statistics where the Dolphins fared well in the 2023 regular season, they were rushing yards allowed and yards allowed per contest. First, Miami allowed just 1,650 rushing yards on the season, the seventh-fewest of any team in the league. Also, opponents averaged only 318.3 yards per game against Miami’s defense, the 10th-fewest in the NFL during the regular season.

But Miami’s defense wasn’t at its best when it mattered most. The Dolphins allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to score 26 points when the two teams played each other in the first round of the playoffs, while Miami scored a season-low seven points in the blowout loss.

It will be exciting to see if Miami’s defense is able to take a step forward in the 2024 regular season under Anthony Weaver, who has more than a decade of experience coaching at the NFL level.
