The New England Patriots reportedly are adding another quarterback to their roster ahead of their Week 2 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

Ian Book, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is joining the Pats, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Book has appeared in one game in his NFL career, and it came during the 2021 season with the New Orleans Saints. Ironically, he faced the Dolphins in that matchup.

Miami won that game 20-3, as Book struggled mightily. He completed just 12 of his 20 pass attempts for 135 yards and two interceptions. He also added three carries for six yards.

It was a tough scenario for Book in his first ever NFL start, as the Saints were without Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill, who were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list before the game.

Last season, Book spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he was waived in August of 2023. He did not appear in a regular season game for Philadelphia.

The Patriots could use some depth at the quarterback position behind Mac Jones after they placed quarterback Matt Corral on the exempt/left squad list Saturday, prior to the team’s Week 1 loss to the Eagles.

“He’s in exempt status, and I don’t have any comment on it,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said of Corral after the Patriots’ loss. “That’s a personal matter.”

Corral, 24, was a third-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he was added to New England’s roster after being waived by the Panthers prior to the 2023 regular season. Corral missed his entire rookie season with a foot injury that he suffered in preseason.

The Patriots also have Bailey Zappe, who was a backup quarterback for the team last season, as an option behind Jones. Zappe was released prior to Week 1, but he signed with the team’s practice squad and was elevated to the 53-man roster when Corral was placed on the exempt/left squad list.

Unless there are major injuries to the Patriots quarterbacks against Miami, it’s unlikely that Book will see the field in Week 2.

The Dolphins and Patriots will face off on Sunday Night Football this week, with the game scheduled to start at 8:20 p.m. EST.
