Report: Miami Dolphins invite Duke cornerback and Wyoming offensive lineman to rookie minicamp

As many teams are after the conclusion of a draft, the Miami Dolphins have been active in searching for undrafted rookies to add to the roster.

The team is set to host a rookie minicamp sometime soon, and it has been reaching out to prospects to invite them to participate.

Datrone Young, who finished his collegiate career at Duke University after transferring there from Iowa State University, is one player that has received an invitation from the Dolphins.

Young is coming off a 2022 season in which he recorded 45 total tackles, seven passes defended, one interception, one fumble recovery and one tackle for loss. It was arguably his most productive season in college, as he helped the Blue Devils go 9-4.

Having participated in Miami’s local pro day, Young seems to have impressed the Dolphins to a decent degree. He’s performed in some different roles throughout his career and plays the ball pretty well.

The Dolphins experienced many injuries in their defensive backfield last season, so it’s no surprise to see them beef up that department this offseason. Cornerback Cam Smith was selected by Miami with its first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Another prospect that has reportedly been invited to the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp is offensive lineman Eric Abojei, who played his college ball at the University of Wyoming.

Abojei is an intriguing prospect who has some experience at left tackle as well.

“Massive small-area blocker with good strength,” wrote Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline. “Squares into opponents and gets movement run blocking. Quickly sets up in pass protection, immediately gets his hands up, and makes good use of angles. Keeps his head on a swivel and always looks for someone to hit.”

Before the draft began, it was reported that the Dolphins were looking to add a couple of guards in the draft process and would also look for interior lineman after the draft concluded.

Miami wound up taking a cornerback (Smith), running back (Devon Achane), tight end (Elijah Higgins) and offensive tackle (Ryan Hayes) with its four selections in the 2023 draft.

Therefore, any help for the interior offensive line will have to come via a different route. Only time will tell if Young and Abojei are able to impress enough to earn a roster spot down the line.
