Report: Tampa Bay Buccaneers blocked Clyde Christensen from joining Miami Dolphins before 2022 season
- Updated: January 28, 2023
The Miami Dolphins are on the hunt for some new coaches heading into the 2023 NFL offseason, but the 2022 offseason saw even more upheaval in that department. It appears that following the hiring of head coach Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins tried to add Clyde Christensen to the coaching staff.
That motion was denied by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, much to Christensen’s chagrin.
“Christensen has had to manage things, too,” Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported. “He was disappointed prior to the start of the 2022 season when the Bucs denied permission for him to accept a job with the Miami Dolphins as their offensive coordinator, an opportunity that came with a significant pay increase. He also was surprised he was part of the changes to [Todd] Bowles’ staff last week. He opted to retire but will be paid the final year of his contract.”
Perhaps the most interesting thing to note regarding the Dolphins’ attempt to lure Christensen away is how it relates to the team’s long-lived pursuit of star quarterback Tom Brady. Maybe the Dolphins hoped that landing Christensen would improve their chances of eventually adding Brady as well.
Currently, the Brady rumors persist despite the fact that Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa just put in a career year with the team. The questions at quarterback likely would not be a concern for the Dolphins if it weren’t for the health concerns that Tagovailoa is currently dealing with.
After suffering two confirmed concussions in the 2022 NFL season, Tagovailoa remains in concussion protocol over one month after his Week 16 injury.
Now, with Brady’s future in Tampa very much in doubt, the Dolphins are seen as possible contenders for the legend.
As for Christensen, he is retired, and it’s unclear if any kind of offer would convince him to get out of retirement. With that in mind, if news later in the offseason starts to trickle out that the Dolphins are once again thinking of adding him to their staff, fans can be sure that rumors linking Miami and Brady will only grow stronger.
The 2022 season is nearing its end. With the two conference championships slated for Sunday and the Super Bowl scheduled to take place on Feb. 12, Dolphins fans will have to take a wait-and-see approach to find out what the future holds for their beloved franchise.
