Report: Miami Dolphins working out Trey Flowers

3 Min Read

Though the Miami Dolphins already have what is considered to be one of the more talented defenses in the NFL, it looks like the team is considering adding another talented veteran to the unit.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins are working out pass rusher Trey Flowers. Flowers, who won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, last played with the Detroit Lions.

Now, it looks as though his career might get a restart in Miami.

Flowers spent the last three seasons with the Lions, and while his first season with them saw 15 appearances and 15 starts, his last two seasons have seen just 14 appearances and 12 starts combined.

Moreover, his production has taken a dip as well. From 2016 to 2019, he recorded at least 6.5 sacks in each season. Flowers has recorded just 3.5 sacks combined over the past two seasons.

Still, when looking at some of his recent highlights, it is clear that the former fourth-round draft pick can still get around the edge and apply pressure to the quarterback.

Right now, the front seven for the Dolphins seems to be quite set.

The prime players who figure to be applying defensive pressure are Christian Wilkins on the left side of the line, Emmanuel Ogbah on the right side and Melvin Ingram and Jaelan Phillips from the second level.

However, there is no doubt that Flowers could serve as a relief option for essentially all of those players. In his career, he’s played on both the right and left sides of the ball, and he knows how to get around offensive linemen no matter where he’s lined up.

Another reason why Flowers getting worked out by the team is a good sign is that it certainly indicates that there is a fair amount of confidence within the Dolphins facility.

Teams that don’t expect to challenge for a playoff spot don’t typically look to add veteran talent this late in the preseason. The fact that the Dolphins are doing just that should come as a sign that the coaching staff and front office feel confident that something special is brewing.
