Mike McDaniel amusingly changes tune on Dan Marino vs. John Elway debate

The debate about who was better between legendary quarterbacks Dan Marino and John Elway continues to persist to this day.

There likely will never be any clear answer to the debate. However, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel hilariously gave his stand recently.

As a lifelong Denver Broncos fan and Colorado native, McDaniel previously choosing Elway in the debate shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. It should also be noted that McDaniel began his NFL career as a coaching intern with the Broncos in 2005.

But now that he is coaching Miami, McDaniel has opted to side with the Dolphins icon.

Marino and Elway entered the league at the same time. Elway was the first overall pick of the 1983 NFL Draft while Marino was selected 26 picks later. They even retired at nearly the same time. Elway hung up his cleats in 1999 while Marino retired a year after.

A look at their overall stats shows that Marino had a slightly better career. The two quarterbacks also each won one MVP award.

What Elway has going for him in the debate is that he won two Super Bowls. He retired after helping Denver claim two consecutive Super Bowls.

While it may seem like Marino and Elway had a pretty fierce rivalry on the field, they actually shared a close friendship off it.

As for the Dolphins, they have failed to find sustained success since Marino’s retirement. Fans are hoping that will change now that the McDaniel era has begun in South Florida.
