Report: Purdue CB to work out for the Miami Dolphins this week

2 Min Read

The Miami Dolphins reportedly will work out Purdue University cornerback Dedrick Mackey sometime soon.

Mackey, who spent four years with the Boilermakers, seems to be a potential target for Miami in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.

The Dolphins are looking to fortify their secondary around safety Jevon Holland and cornerbacks Xavien Howard and Byron Jones.

Mackey, who appeared in 36 games over his four collegiate seasons, could be a young player that the Dolphins bring along behind their two veteran corners.

Through his four seasons at Purdue, the defensive back totaled 100 total tackles, including six tackles for loss. The corner also recorded one sack, six interceptions and 14 passes defended.

Last season, Mackey played some of the best football of his collegiate career. He recorded three interceptions and three passes defended while making 36 total tackles.

Miami clearly wants to get a closer look at Mackey prior to the draft, and if the workout goes well, there’s a definitely a chance that the team could make it a priority to take him.

The Dolphins are looking to build a contending roster under their new head coach Mike McDaniel.

Miami just missed the playoffs in the past two seasons, as it went 10-6 in the 2020 campaign and 9-8 in the 2021 season. The Dolphins haven’t made the postseason since the 2016 campaign.

The team will rely on some veterans on defense to help make a playoff run, but a player like Mackey could become an interesting piece if he ends up getting selected by the Dolphins in the 2022 NFL Draft.
