Report: Miami Dolphins Want to Pair No. 3 and No. 5 Picks in ‘Godfather Offer’ for No. 1 Pick
- Updated: April 23, 2020
Over the last 24 hours, it has been reported that the Miami Dolphins are trying to acquire the No. 3 overall pick from the Detroit Lions without having to give up their own No. 5 overall selection.
Previously, it was assumed that they were trying to do so in order to pick both an offensive lineman and a quarterback within the top five picks.
However, with the clock ticking down to the beginning of the draft, it has been revealed that the Dolphins are actually trying to acquire the No. 3 overall pick in order to pair it with the No. 5 pick in a last-ditch effort to nab the top overall selection.
“The Dolphins aren’t trying to get the third overall pick from the Lions without giving up the fifth overall pick in order to make two picks in the top five,” Mike Florio of NBC Sports reported. “Instead, the Dolphins believe that a potential Godfather offer to the Bengals for the first overall pick would be even harder to refuse if the Dolphins offer both No. 3 and No. 5 as part of the package.
“Per a league source, that’s the primary purpose of the Miami effort to finagle No. 3 from Detroit.”
If the Dolphins achieve what they are reportedly trying to do, it would undoubtedly turn the entire draft on its head.
Furthermore, it would surely lead to prized prospect Joe Burrow ending up in South Florida.
Clearly, there are numerous unknown variables at the moment. However, what seems likely is that the Dolphins have some indication that if they were able to get the No. 3 pick and hold onto their No. 5 selection, the Cincinnati Bengals may be willing to play ball.
Time is running out for the Dolphins to try to get the quarterback they so desperately want.
If they are able to pull this Herculean move off, this year’s draft would surely be one to remember for Dolphins fans everywhere.
