The Miami Dolphins signed running back Demitrius Bronson and free agent safety Phillip Thomas on Monday night, the team announced. To make room for Bronson and Thomas on the roster, Miami waived safety Shamiel Gary and wide receiver Tyler McDonald.
The 5’9″, 211-pound Bronson joins Miami after spending the 2015 offseason with the Seattle Seahawks as well as time on their practice squad during the 2014 season before being waived on July 22nd. He originally signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent on June 16th, 2014. Despite some action in the NFL preseason, the Eastern Washington University product has not appeared in any regular season games yet.
A 6’0″, 223-pound strong safety out of Fresno State University, Thomas joins the Dolphins after spending the previous two seasons (2013-14) with the Washington Redskins before being waived on August 5th. After he was drafted in the fourth round (119th overall) by the Redskins in the 2013 NFL Draft, he missed the entire 2013 season after he suffered a torn Lisfranc ligament in his left foot during the preseason.
Thomas initially began the 2014 season on the Redskins’ practice squad prior to being elevated to the active roster on November 1, 2014. In his career, he has appeared in eight games with four starts and recorded 27 tackles (19 solo) and one fumble recovery. Thomas was originally selected in the fourth round (119th overall) by Washington in the 2013 NFL draft.
With the addition of Thomas, he should provide nice depth behind starting safeties Reshad Jones and Louis Delmas. If he makes the 53-man roster for Week 1 of the regular season, Thomas will face his former team when the Dolphins travel to FedExField to play the Redskins on Sunday, September 13th.
